Well we’ll be leaving the sunny climes of the North West on Friday 18th July 2014 and making the trip down to the south coast to the official Mongol Rally start. We’ll briefly drive through central London to Battersea Park to meet fellow ralliers before crossing the channel into Europe. From there we will head east towards Munich for a few beers before heading onward through Eastern Europe towards Serbia and Bulgaria to Turkey, we expect that to be the easy bit!
From here we will then have to tackle Georgia and the famously unorganised Azerbaijan Caspian Sea ferry crossing from Baku to Turkmenbashi in Turkmenistan. After having put our life in the hands of a vodka swilling Russian captain we will then drive through Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan to Kyrgyzstan before arriving in the land of Borat Sagadeyev, Kazakhstan. We’d expect to cross Kazakhstan in a few days, although our Dixie Chicken comrades have said the roads are horrendous with pot holes the size of our little Skoda and there is also little mapping of the area… so we’ll see.
Hopefully escaping Kazakhstan within a few days we’ll be slipping into Russia briefly before taking on the worst Mongolia has to offer us as we power through the steppe and the Gobi before arriving at the finish line in Ulaanbaatar some 10,000 miles later. It’s going to be epic!
Here is our current proposed route… the fact of the matter is, we don’t really have a set route, it’s more of an un-route, we fully intend on driving in circles and getting lost in a country ending with ‘stan’.
